Thomas Telford’s Conwy Suspension Bridge

As National Trust members, a visit to the Conwy Suspension Bridge was a must during our trip. This historic bridge was constructed between 1822 and 1826. It once carried the main road connecting Chester to Bangor. A marvel of engineering in its time, the bridge played a vital role in regional transport for over a century.

However, its role as a road bridge came to an end when a modern replacement was built alongside it, leading to the bridge’s closure to vehicular traffic in December 1958. Since 1965, the Conwy Suspension Bridge has been owned and maintained by the National Trust. It is now used exclusively as a footbridge. Walking across it today offers not just stunning views of Conwy Castle and the estuary but also a tangible connection to the history and ingenuity of the early 19th century.
